Waterways don’t respect state lines, but the rules often change from one Bay state to another. Understanding the unique governmental structure of each Bay state allows us all to collaborate effectively to create & enforce law and policy that protects and restores local water quality and ultimately the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed. CLA developed this chart in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Commission to demonstrate how differences in size, population, legislative process, and competing priorities, among many other things, may cause challenges AND create opportunities that move us toward our common goals. By embracing our differences, we will be better able to work together to achieve clean water and healthy communities.
