Special Message from Jackie Guild, CLA Executive Director
Dear Friend of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance:
Post-election, CLA has been receiving inquiries from our clients and partners concerning what the future holds for the Bay with a new President. Will progress move forward with the Bay Clean Up Plan? Will the federal government provide support and enforce programs meant to implement the Clean Water Act and other laws that affect the Bay and its rivers and lands? What can happen to existing laws and regulations?
CLA is working to provide answers to these questions and to provide strategic advice and action through our network of volunteer attorneys. But, even more importantly, we must be ready to react effectively to attempts to undermine the current legal framework so that no reversals are made to the health of the Bay and its watershed.
To do this, free legal assistance will be more important now than it ever has been in CLA’s eight years serving the individuals, community groups and organizations working to protect and restore the Bay and its watershed.
CLA has a new staff attorney joining out team in the New Year to extend the reach of our free legal services, we are expanding our volunteer attorney network for greater capacity to meet new challenges, and we are researching innovative legal theories to provide effective tools to protect the health of the Bay and its communities.
This week, you will receive CLA’s annual end of the year fundraising letter. It will include a list of the almost 200 clients that we have served on hundreds of legal matters. I also include our client list below for your convenience. I think you will recognize more than a few of our clients who serve your community and the greater Bay watershed. With the anticipated changes from the Trump Administration, the work of these individuals and non-profit organizations will be crucial to ensuring clean water, air, and healthy lands. CLA volunteer attorneys are enabling them to bring lawsuits, change laws, comment on regulations and permits, and testify at county and state hearings – and we will continue to do so with your help.
I encourage you to join us as the legal champions for the Bay and contribute to our end of the year fundraising campaign. This campaign serves as a major source of our operating funds. Thank you in advance!
Warmest Wishes for the Holiday Season,
Jackie Guild, Executive Director
